Great Circle Route

Great Circle Route

Vancouver Island Great Circle Route

I was up early with a plan of driving the Great Circle Route on Southern Vancouver Island. The Great Circle Route is typically heading out from Langford towards Sooke, BC on Hwy 14. Passing Sooke and along the west coast until reaching the tiny fishing town of Port Renfew. Continue reading →

Mystic Beach

Mystic Beach

A beautiful day in May prompted a trip to Mystic Beach

A short drive out to the China Beach parking lot with Emily and the dogs on a busy May Long weekend and we were off to Mystic Beach. With a winding trail through the trees and over the roots for 2km its not the easiest hike. Multiple small stream crossings as well as a suspension bridge are part of the trail down to the beach. Roche Cove Park Walk

Roche Cove Park Walk

Misty walk from Roche Cove to Matheson Lake

On a misty winters morning we took the dogs for a short hike. As old Axel dog is getting pretty slow we decided on something easy. We parked at Roche Cove in East Sooke and planned on walking the trail up to Matheson Lake. Continue reading →

Jordan River Waterfalls

Jordan River Waterfalls

Chasing Waterfalls on a rainy day in Jordan River BC

With the rain pounding down and the clouds hanging so low its hard to tell where the clouds end and the fog begins, or as we Islanders call it, a regular November day. I piled the two dogs into the truck and head out towards Sooke BC. Continue reading →

Cowichan Bay Sunrise

Cowichan Bay Sunrise

Cowichan Bay Estuary, Duncan BC

The salmon are still running so I made a trip up to Cowichan Bay to see if I would have better luck at finding some eagles. Early morning traffic was light as I raced the sun up and over the Malahat, fighting the urge to stop at the summit and shoot the brightening sky.

Camino del Norte 2018 – Day 19

Camino del Norte 2018 – Day 19

Camino del Norte

Day 19

Sept 21

Hola all,
More of the same…our group is shrinking as we break off onto separate paths. Some stayed with the Camino Norte, some have used up their holiday time and must return to whatever is their real life. A few of us have turned away from the coast to follow the Camino Primitivo route to Santiago. There were sad farewells but also the prospect of new faces on the same path as we walk toward the mountains.

Camino del Norte

Day 14

Sept 16

Cloudy day today….nice for walking. Yesterday was more sunny so I sweat more….it’s better when it’s cloudy. A bit cool in the evening as we sit outdoors at our albergue. Today was another long day since the sleeping places are not so numerous. We walked almost 30km today.

Camino del Norte 2018 – Day 7/8

Camino del Norte

Day 7&8

Sept 9,10

Hola from Santoña,
In my last instalment we were staying the night in Bilbao.
We left the Bilbao municipal Albergue at 7:00 and walked along the riverbank back past the Guggenheim toward the sea. Twelve km and we paid a few euros to take the historic hanging bridge thingy across to Portogalete. The bridge was built 125 years ago and is one of a very few still in operation.

Camino del Norte 2018 – Day 4/5

Camino del Norte

Day 4&5

Sept 6,7

Hola again,

Today Donna and I are sitting in the warm sunshine outside a wonderful albergue in Eskerika. We arrived at the 3:00pm opening time and were the first ones here. Donna had made a reservation which was a good idea as the proprietor says the place is full tonight. We were first into the shower plus for 3€ we gave the man all of our accumulated laundry to machine wash and dry. Our rain parkas hang on the line to dry beside our silk sleeping liners airing in the sunshine.
I last wrote 2 days ago… from the city of Deba.
