Camino del Norte

Day 28

Sept 30

Hola,
Today it was about the rocks.. I marvel at the sheer volume of rock construction we see as we walk. Miles and miles of stone fences…some built by the Romans before Christ. Rock walls, houses and churches. Slate roofs and huge blocks of stone piled perfectly to create wonderful architecture.

Camino del Norte

Day 26/27

Sept 28,29

Hola,
Yesterday was a great day…we were in a wonderful new and still-under-construction albergue where we sat on the sundeck and enjoyed drinks and snacks with our friend Gregory from Budapest and Manuela from Argentina. We did our washing earlier and everything dried in the sunshine.

Camino del Norte

Day 24/25

Sept 26,27

Lots of photos…
A couple of big days…. Yesterday we left the albergue in Berducedo…a nice enough place but something was missing…it had no soul… nowhere for people to congregate so it just felt impersonal. We had the pilgrim dinner there for 10€ and it again was much more than we could eat…plus the usual bottle of red.

Camino del Norte

Day 23

Sept 25

We left this morning at 7:40… we are walking alone as our Dutch violin player and our Danish guy have decided to camp out on the mountain tonight. We see a romance blooming with those two as we have walked together since Irun…3 weeks ago and they have become very close.

Camino del Norte 2018 – Day 22

Camino del Norte

Day 22

Sept 24

Last night we stayed in a tiny place called Campiello close to the town of Timeo. We walked 25km…..almost the whole day in the rain!
The previous night was a great experience in the little albergue in Bodenaya. We had a dinner with 16 others…the hospitalero asked everyone to give their name, home country and reason for walking. We had a young man from Moscow, a girl from Poland, a man from Budapest, a German, a girl from Mexico City, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and of course many Spaniards…everyone with a story… most looking for a change in their lives.

Day 21

Sept 23

Hola,
Tonight we are in a wonderful Albergue in the tiny village of Bodenaya…near the equally lovely town of Salas.
A short day today..19 km. Last night we stayed in the Monastery in a town whose name escapes me just now. We walked a short 20 something km from the big city of Oviedo to the old Monastery.

Camino del Norte

Day 19

Sept 21

Hola all,
More of the same…our group is shrinking as we break off onto separate paths. Some stayed with the Camino Norte, some have used up their holiday time and must return to whatever is their real life. A few of us have turned away from the coast to follow the Camino Primitivo route to Santiago. There were sad farewells but also the prospect of new faces on the same path as we walk toward the mountains.

Camino del Norte

Day 18

Sept 20

Hola,
A quick note to you this morning. We are just leaving Siera and will walk the short distance to Oviedo today. There we plan to stay 2 nights before heading into the Primitivo. All is well here…we continue to walk some long days….today is only 18 km which suits me fine as my feet are still complaining. It’s hard to get going in the morning but within a half hour I am ok to keep up with our group. It’s a nice package…we are 6 or 8 persons and Donna is in charge.

Sept 18

Hola folks,
Not so much new to report. Today we walked over 30 km with our core group of 6…..Donna reserved ahead for 8 beds here in Villaviciosa…6 for our group plus 2 extra for the others who seem to connect most nights.
We have our two Dutch girls, one Danish guy plus a Korean gentleman from Seattle. Today we also walked with a German fellow who joined us yesterday.

Day 14

Sept 16

Cloudy day today….nice for walking. Yesterday was more sunny so I sweat more….it’s better when it’s cloudy. A bit cool in the evening as we sit outdoors at our albergue. Today was another long day since the sleeping places are not so numerous. We walked almost 30km today.

Camino del Norte

Day 12

Sept 14

Hola from Revilla,
Our days start to blend together as we find a rhythm to this exercise. Wake up is usually between 6:00 and 7:00…the first people begin quietly getting dressed and organized by 6:00 and slowly the rest of the people join in. At the Albergues that offer breakfast it usually commences at 6:30 with toast and coffee etc and most places have a checkout time of 8:00.

Camino del Norte

Day 11

Sept 13

Hola,
A quick note…we are taking a little train from one station called Boo de Pielago across a river to get off at the next station. This will save us a 7 km trip around. The train comes every half hour
next one at 9:32am.
Overcast and cool again today… plan to travel 29 km today to get to the next recommended Albergue. We had a wonderful night at the last place… a small house with 14 beds and a communal dinner.

Camino del Norte

Day 7&8

Sept 9,10

Hola from Santoña,
In my last instalment we were staying the night in Bilbao.
We left the Bilbao municipal Albergue at 7:00 and walked along the riverbank back past the Guggenheim toward the sea. Twelve km and we paid a few euros to take the historic hanging bridge thingy across to Portogalete. The bridge was built 125 years ago and is one of a very few still in operation.

Camino del Norte 2018 – Day 6

Camino del Norte

Day 6

Sept 8

Bilbao, Spain

Hola All,
Today we arrived in the city of Bilbao. This is a large city of over 1 million, it stretches along the river and tomorrow we will walk along the river bank to the sea about 12km from where we are presently.
We had a quiet night at our last albergue near Eskerika. We slept a bit late, had a fast coffee/tea and were underway at 7:20. A good time to start walking as it is light enough that headlamps aren’t needed. The morning sky was completely clear…blue and cloudless.

Camino del Norte

Day 4&5

Sept 6,7

Hola again,

Today Donna and I are sitting in the warm sunshine outside a wonderful albergue in Eskerika. We arrived at the 3:00pm opening time and were the first ones here. Donna had made a reservation which was a good idea as the proprietor says the place is full tonight. We were first into the shower plus for 3€ we gave the man all of our accumulated laundry to machine wash and dry. Our rain parkas hang on the line to dry beside our silk sleeping liners airing in the sunshine.
I last wrote 2 days ago… from the city of Deba.

Camino del Norte

Day 2 & 3

Sept 4&5 2018

Supposed to be a short day… but wasn’t to be…

I missed writing yesterday for no particular reason…each day seems to be similar but different too. I forget quickly what we did just a day ago…this is sometimes a good thing as it is not always as good as the Facebook picture.

Deba

We are presently settled in the town of Deba in the municipal Albergue for which we pay just 5€. It was a short day as we departed Getaria this morning at 7:30 and were at the Albergue office here at 12:00 a total distance of perhaps 16km. It started to rain at 10:30 lightly at first but persistent enough that we got quite wet. We have wonderful rain parkas but today they remained inside our packs.

Camino Del Norte 2018 – Day 1

Camino Del Norte 2018 – Day 1

Camino Del Norte

Before we begin with these blog posts I want to explain exactly what is going on here so there is no confusion. My father and step-mother hiked the Camino del Norte in the Fall of 2018 and during that pilgrimage my father wrote many fantastic emails and facebook posts chronicling their journey. I thought it was a fantastic story that should be shared with more people interested in walking the Camino so I asked him if I could re-post his photos and posts on here to share with a wider audience. I marvel at the things my parents do in their 60’s and find great inspiration in their spirit of adventure and willingness to “stray from the norm” and follow a different path.
And on that note, Life is a Camino, enjoy! ~ Brady
